ÚıÚı- Abstract Is Nuclear Family in Thailand Rising or Declining ? Napaporn Chayovan Commissioner of The Royal Institute’s Demography Dictionary Commitee; Associate Professor, College of Population Studies, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand A widely concerned issue related to the rapid increase in the number and proportion of the older persons in Thailand is the change of the family structure from extended to nuclear type. This change is believed to reflect the weakening of family support or less care that family may provide for their elderly members. Empirical data from the population censuses of Thailand from 1980 to 2000, however, provide opposite evidence to this general belief. During 1980 to 2000, the proportions of nuclear households/families in Thailand declined, while the proportions of extended households/families increased. Household or family structure is thus not a good indicator of whether the elderly will be supported or cared for by their families, instead relationships of family members should be given the interest. Key words : household structure, family type, older persons, elderly care ÚıÙÙ. Ú. §≥–°√√¡°“√ à ߇ √‘ ¡·≈–ª√– “πß“π ºŸâ Ÿ ßÕ“¬ÿ ·Àà ß™“µ‘ ”𗠰𓬰√— ∞¡πµ√’ (ÚıÙı) ·ºπºŸâ Ÿ ßÕ“¬ÿ ·Àà ß™“µ‘ æ.». ÚıÙı-ÚıˆÙ.
