These words are called Kham Khlai. Phraya Anu manrathchathon suggested that these words with similar sounds and meanings were at one time, the same words but their vowels, consonants or tones were changed over time and they eventually became different words. This paper presents various studies of such words in Thai, along with providing examples from other languages in the Tai family, especially the Tai Nuea words of which particular sounds are related to their meanings. Keywords: Kham Khlai
