362 The Journal of the Royal Institute of Thailand Vol. 38 No. 1 Jan-Mar 2013 การพั ฒนาดนตรี ไทยสู่ประชาคมอาเซี ยน Abstract Thai Music Development and the ASEAN Chanok Sakrik Associate Fellow of the Academy of Arts, The Royal Institute, Thailand ASEAN is the Association of South East Asian Nations. It consists of ten countries in Southeast Asia who work together to insure inter-regional trade, stability and cultural appreciation. It is the author's belief that in order to have a successful exchange between members cultural differences should be understood. One of the ways to acheive that is through music. By introducing foreign instruments to a Thai song, one can still maintain the essence of Thainess and Thai tradition while learning to integrate their neighbor's culture. In present day, we can see several instruments from other cultures such as Gu-Zheng, Dan Bau, Saung Gauk, Sitar and Pipa being perform along side our own traditional instruments. Just like what HM King Bhumibhol once said, “To preserve one's culture is to preserve one's nation.” Keywords : ASEAN, Gu-Zheng, Dan-Bau, Saung-Gauk, Sitar, Pipa
