There are a great number of scriptures written by monks and Buddhist Laymen. Most scriptures were written on palm leaves in Dhamma script of Lanna. Monks wrote and used these scriptures as texts for teaching and propagating Buddhism. Laymen, on the other hand, wrote the scriptures with the belief that they would earn great merit. The contents of these scriptures are Buddhist faith, folk tales, law, ethics, history, astrology, poetry, medicinal recipes, rituals and magic.
