Abstract Studying the Paintings of Devas Sanan Ratana Associate Fellow of The Academy of Arts, The Royal Institute, Thailand The purpose of studying the paintings of devas in the construction of the Meru or royal crematoriums is to find the places where they are depicted to be used as a guideline in making paintings for the royal cremation ceremonies where meru are constructed. From the study of evidences and documents, it is found that from the Mid-Ayutthaya Period to the of reign King Rama IV of the Rattanakosin Period, devas celestial maidens, and giants in the standing, walking, sitting, and flying postures are mostly depicted on the fire screen. There are also paintings of devas decorating the walls and the supporters. At present, modern incinerators are used in the royal cremation ceremonies.
