Evidently, the word Phimai is derived from Vimāya which was the name of the a Buddha image known as Kamrate ṅ Jagat Vimāya, the presiding Buddhist deity of the temple. Vimāya probably means the One who is without māyā (illusion). The worship of Deity Vimāya existed at Phimai during the reign of three kings of Cambodia, namely Jayavīrvarn (1002-1008?), Sūryavarman I (1002-50) and Sūryavarman II (1113-1167?) and the worship may exist even later. Śrīvīrendrādhipativarman, a dignitary in the court of King Sūryavarman II, erected Deity Trailokyavijaya to be the Commander-in-chief of Kamrate ṅ Jagat Vimāya in 1107 CE. Buddhism at Phimai was of Vajrayāna sect and sometimes syncretism of Buddhism with Śaivism also existed at Phimai. Vajrayāna Buddhism continued to exist at Phimai till the reign of King Jayavarman VII (1181-cir.1218). Keywords: Vimāya, Phimai, Trailokyavijaya, Vajrasattva, Vajradhara.
