Abstract The Importance of Spellings in Old Documents Navavan Bandhumedha Fellow, Academy of Arts The Royal Society of Thailand Spellings of some words in old documents enable us to infer that the words have undergone phonological changes: changes in the pronounciation of vowels, consonants or tones. Spellings give evidence that some vowels, consonants and consonant clusters once occurred in the Thai language but are not found at present. Moreover, spellings of some words help with the consideration of their origins. The words migth be Thai or be derived from foreign words. Keywords: spellings, old documents
