353 Proceedings of the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Congress ART THERAPY ON ORPHANS WITH DEPRESSION Siraporn Maneelert, Lertsiri Bovornkitti Abstract: The study of the study groups was conducted by using the Pretest-posttest art activities design aiming at reducing depression in five orphans aged 9 - 11 years included from screening of 15 subjects by the depression test. Therapeutic results of art therapy program, which include the historical background and test completed the 10 art activity sessions with the Children’s Depression Inventory before and after and were statistically compared using the pair t-test. The result was statistically significant at .05 which denotes that the depression was satisfactorily mitigated. Keywords : art therapy, orphans, depression, depressive state Introduction The national statistic survey on children and adolescence year 2008 found that the population under 17 age group number was 17.4 millions, 8.9 millions are boys and 8.5 millions are girls, at which 61.8 percent live with their parents, not living with father nor mother or orphans are 20.1 percent, living either with father or mother are 18.1 percent due to parents separation or divorces, while the number of children living with mother out do the father at 5 to one. (15.0 and 3.1 consecutively) Besides that the survey found that the number of children under 17 who lost either father or mother reached 90.8 percent, and lost both parents at 9.2 percent, in which both children groups were classified orphans. Juraporn Mastianwong (2007: 21) had said that the national statistic survey on children and adolescense reflected that Thai children crisis and is a forecast on the future development of the nation regarding such weakness of our children upon cultural change, which needs family strong support. However, many families are negligent in sparing more family times, and spent most to their earning incomes to tackle harder economic forces on higher increased of living costs. Parents’ adaptation to new socio-economic living caused the families to be apart or broken in many cases that created new orphan each time. Unwanted pregnancy is also another prime factor to orphans increasing numbers in our society. Orphans are truly unfortunate population, as they would grow up with lacks of spiritual and family supports. Most orphans carried on improper life quality and likely to develop unpleasant behaviors and inflicted minds, as they often were found maltreated.The orphans developmany psychological problems, mental weaknesses, including lost of self-confidence and identities. They tend to avoid social, lacks of responses and responsibilities, shut off to interactions, and disorganized. Their cognitive level and reasoning are mostly at low functioning, so they are unable to separate between right and wrong. The orphan’s mental status and emotional quotient should be attended in order to prevent them from getting depression that would makes their life even more hazardous because their behaviors could be jeopardized and reflected negative behaviors such as anti-social, aggression, disclosure, and turned to drugs users, etc.
