262 Proceedings of the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Congress In English, the meanings of the word ‘art’ which is closest to the subject under discussion are 1) the expression of human creative skill and 2) works produced by human creative skills. Therefore, art therapy is concerned with a treatment using artistic work, not a treatment with artistic skill. The word ‘art’ in ‘art therapy’ then means works produced by human creative skills not ‘the expression of human creative skill’. Theword ‘art’ is generally translated intoThai as silapa. Thus, art therapy is generally known as silapa bambat. But in the latest edition of the Royal Institute Dictionary B.E. 2554 A.D. 2011, the meaning of silapa has been given as ‘skill, workmanship, craftsmanship, making something exquisite, expressing emotions through various media such as sound, line, color, and shape as evident in fine arts, music, painting, and drama’. (The Royal Institute, 2556: 1144) According to this definition. the word ‘art’ in ‘art therapy would become silapakambambat or kan bambat thi mee silapa which would not be in accordance with the meaning of ‘art therapy’ which emphasizes treatment through using work of art. The phrase ‘work of art’ would agree more with silapakam. the meaning of which appears in the Royal Institute Dictionary B.E. 2554 as that which is art, that which is created as art such as sculpture, architecture. (op.cit., ibid) As a result, the Committee for Coining English - Thai Art Terms has coined the Thai word for ‘art therapy’ as silapakam bambat, meaning treatment through using work of art. The word silapakam bambat would appear in the next edition of the Royal Society’s English - Thai Dictionary of Art Terms for students. academics, and interested persons to use as a tool to help them write documents in Thai, which would draw interest to the art therapy circle in Thailand and make it known more extensively.
