245 Proceedings of the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Congress Treatment: September 14, 2010 - Present (The Friend of the Asian Elephant had redeemed Boonme’s life from the owner) The explosion tore the back of her right rear foot apart. The sole was almost gone and left with only three toenails. Even though the lesion of Boonme was similar to other elephants and she was still young, but the treatment period took longer than the others. Until now, the lesions are not completely healed (The remaining is approximately 25%) and it may be because the health was traumatized both physically and mentally from stepping on the landmines and separation from the mother elephant to unfamiliar new place, people and food. Miss Soraida Salwala, the Secretary-General of Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation had provided the cushion for Pung Boonme to stand and lay down. However, she only lay down for only the first two months of the treatment. Within the past 19 months, Boonme had slept while standing against the iron rail. On June 25, 2012, the condition of the elephant was concerned due to the carelessness of the veterinarian for not carefully checking the cushion. Boonme was standing on the wet cushion soaked up with water and her right back sole peeled off. The Secretary-General was worried about Boonme’s condition and provided a supporting sling that connected to the hoist at nighttime and disconnected in daytime. On September 11, 2012 between 2 a.m. - 6 a.m., Boonme was eventually able to lie down on her side and got up by herself. After all, she would lie down on both sides and rested her foot during the daytime. She lay down and got up by herself and the wound under the back sole was completely healed. The hoist and supporting sling was taken off for Boonme on October 13, 2012 and she was able to sleep regularly the following nights. The Secretary-General brought the staff to come and talk soothingly and feed the food she used to eat. Until present, Boonme has been very healthy, cheerful, eaten well and the wound also has been improving. 15. Sido Pahepo (22 years old): Left foreleg was injured by stepping on landmines
