Aremark of the succession to the throne in the Rattanakosin period was that nobility, royalty, and senior monks as witnesses, consulted and selected the best and most perfect prince to succeed the throne, called traditionally as the Mahachonnikorn Samosornsommut, “elected by the people”. The custom began in the reign of King Rama I and it was clearly seen in the selection of King Rama III, King Rama IV, and King Rama V. The custom helped to get the right person into the right seat. The kings’ hard work benefited the people and kingdom. This norm was abolished in 1886. keywords : Mahachonnikorn Samosornsommut, Succession to the throne, the Rattanakosin period
