When the camps were being emptied of their countless thousands of prisoners. Ruslan is bewildered and afraid. He is unfit for the free life because the camp code in all that Ruslan has ever known. He finds freedom degrading. In the end, Ruslan finds that he cannot imagine a world without prisoners and masters, so, he re-created them. The gulag is dead, but it lives in the mind of a dog who fears freedom. Georgi Vladimov has created in Ruslan a portrait of the Russian çsoulé-loyal, outrageously, narrow-minded, generous, self-lacerating, filled with animal wilderness Ruslan becomes the the Russian çsoulé veering toward extinction. Faithful Ruslan is Vladimovûs masterpieces, campleted in 1974 and has never been printed in the USSR till 1990. Key words : guard dog, gulag, Russian soul.
