In Albert, Ethel M.; Denis, Theodore C.; and Peterfreund, Shelden P. eds. Great Traditions in Ethics. New York: D. Van Nostrand Company, 1969. Abstract : The Phenomena of Catugama-Ramadeva in Ethical Perspectives Pataraporn Sirikanchana Associate Fellow of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, The Royal Institute, Thailand The phenomena of Catugama-Ramadeva are morally important to Thai society. They particularly reflect Thai social values and simultaneously encourage all Buddhists to think and act according to the Buddhist ethics. At present, they reflect Thai social values as follows :- 1. Many Buddhists believe that all good and bad things in their lives are effects of the predestination. They thus faithfully make offerings to gods and invoke divine protection. 2. Many Buddhists do not believe in the Law of Karma, do not live by wisdom, and reject the principle of self-reliance. 3. Some Buddhists still enjoy materialistic lives, consumerism, and being moneygrabbing. 4. Buddhists generally follow utilitarianism. 5. Some Buddhists degrade and dehumanize other people through using them for personal benefits. These problems can be solved by the promotion of right faith, moral wisdom, self- reliance, correct understanding of the Buddha-dharma, and practice of basic humanity. The phenomena of Catugama-Ramadeva gives valuable lessons to Thai society, e.g., precautions to lead oneûs life, an understanding of oneûs own religious morality, and the practice according to oneûs ethical principle. Key words : phenomena of Catugama-Ramadeva, ethics, Law of Karma, wisdom, faith, utilitarianism ` ` ` ` ` ` ` `
