124 Notes on the genus Hedychium J. Konig (Zingiberaceae) known for Thailand The Journal of the Royal Institute of Thailand Vol. 33 No. 3 Jul.-Sep. 2008 .. bract, staminodes oblanceolate ( ca. 3.5 by 0.5 cm), and labellum sub- orbicular to obovate ( ca. 3.0 by 2.5 cm), clawed, apex 2-cleft. [Fig. 11] 10. H. gomezianum Wall., Hookerûs J. Bot. Kew Gard. Misc. 5 (1853) 368. Type: Gomez, Myanmar, Tavoy (lectotype K) This is one of beautiful epiphytic species. The plant is distributed from Myanmar, Thailand, Indochina, to Malay Peninsula. In Thailand, this species can be seen in evergreen forests from southeast- ern provinces (Changwat Chantaburi and Trat) to peninsular provinces (Changwat Ranong, Surat Thani, and Krabi). It is easily recognized by the following characters: ligule oblong (3-3.5 cm long), apex broadly acute; bracts not imbricate, one-flowered; bracteole folded, hairy; staminodes oblanceolate, clawed; and labellum clawed, deeply divided, lobes oblong, apex rounded. [Fig. 12] 11. H. griffithianum Wall., Hookerûs J. Bot. Kew Gard. Misc. 5 (1853) 369. Type: Griffith 5660, India, Khasia (lectotype K) This species was first described from the specimen collected from Khasia Hills in 1853. It can be found in evergreen forests at Doi Inthanon (Changwat Chiang Mai) and Doi Hua Chang (Changwat Chiang Rai). The plant can be distinguished by the following characters: leaves lanceolate, upper surface marked with glandu- lar lines, lower surface villose, inflorescence lax, bracts not imbri- cate, rachis usually visible, 1-flow- ered, flower white to pale yellow, staminodes linear, labellum clawed, deeply bilobed, lobes linear. 12. H. khaomaenense Picheans. & Mokkamul, Folia malaysiana 6 (2005) 20-22, 26. plates 2, 7- 10. Type: Picheansoonthon & Mokkamul 544 (holotype BKF, paratype SING, PEK) This taxon was recently described by the first author and his student (Picheansoonthon and Mokkamul, 2006). It is closely related to H. cylindricum Ridl. but differed in its glabrous sheath, gla- brous calyx tube, shorter claw of the labellum, and red oblong fruits. This new species can be easily distinguished from other species found in Thailand by its red bilobe ligule, cylindrical inflorescence, broadly-ovate imbricate bracts with red margins, 2-4 flowers in each bract, and long corolla tubes, some twisted. This species is endemic to Khao Maen in Changwat Nakhon Si Thammarat in southern Thailand. [Fig. 13] 13. H. longicornutum Griff. ex Baker in Hook. F., Fl. Brit. Ind. 6 (1892) 228. Type: Griffith, Malaysia, Malacca This is also a very beautiful epiphytic species found in moist evergreen and peat swamp forests. It is common in Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary in Changwat Narathiwat and Yala of peninsular Thailand. The plant could be easily recognized by its compact spikes, dense-flowered, imbricate hairy 1-flowered bracts, and characteristic floral structure, ie. the yellow, linear, curl-backward staminodes and the yellow deeply- divided labellum with linear, curl- backward halves. [Figs 14 & 15] 14. H. samuiense Sirirugsa & K. Larsen, Nord. J. Bot. 15 (1995) 301. Type: Kerr 12540, Thailand, Ko Samui (holotype K)
