169 วินั ย ภู่ระหงษ์ วารสารราชบัณฑิตยสถาน ปีที่ ๓๙ ฉบับที่ ๓ ก.ค.-ก.ย. ๒๕๕๗ Abstract The Relationship between the Arts of Pleasure Vinai Bhurahongse Associate Fellow of the Academy of Arts, The Royal Institute, Thailand The five types of art: architecture, sculpture, painting, music, and literature are related in various ways in that they join or enhance one another, or use the subject matter or method of other art or arts. Sculpture blends in with architecture and enhances the beauty of the architecture to perfection. Moreover, sculpture may employ the method of painting to create a picture. Literature takes its subject matters from architecture, sculpture, and painting in its descriptive passages. On the other hand, architecture, sculpture, and painting employ the literary text to create the form of art in each respective field. Moreover, literature intersperses the context of architecture, sculpture, or painting in the story to tell the story smoothly, to enhance the plot, and to express some thoughts. Painting and literature are in that painting tells a story with pictures and literature draws a picture by telling a story. Besides, both painting and literature reciprocally employ the method of each other. Painting creates pictures that conform with the unfolding of time, whereas literature narrates several incidents to make the reader imagine that they occur simultaneously. Literature and music are similar in many aspects. Both arts involve sounds. They are conditioned by time frame and are related to each other in their connection. Literature takes in music as part of the storytelling and music employs lyrics as text for singing. Keywords : relationship, arts of pleasure, architecture, sculpture, painting, music, literature
