แม่อุ้มบุญ : การประเมิ นคุณค่าทางพุทธจริ ยศาสตร์และวั ฒนธรรมไทย 154 The Journal of the Royal Society of Thailand Vol. 40 No. 3 Jul-Sep 2015 Abstract Surrogate Mother: The Evaluation according to Ethics and Thai Culture Pataraporn Sirikanchana Associate Fellow of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, The Royal Society of Thailand. “Surrogate mother” is a woman who is pregnant for those who are unable to naturally give birth to a child. The process needs a reproductive technology and thus causes some serious problems in Buddhist ethics and Thai culture. The surrogate mother merely works for others and cannot claim that she is the real mother of a baby. Therefore, she cannot take the role of a mother according to the Buddhist teaching. The problem cannot be solved by the opposition to scientific and technological progress. On the contrary, it can be solved through prudence, responsibility, and wisdom. Especially, Thai people need to develop themselves through moral education, establish moral values for the sake of cultural preservation and uphold the institution of Thai family. Keywords : surrogate mother, Buddhist ethics, Thai culture
