Although the tribute system was important for politics and economy of Siam, the system expressed and accommodated the unequal relationship and erected an artificial barrier between Siam and China. Thus, King Mongkut stopped the 561 years of tradition of sending tribute to the emperors of China in 1853. However, China tried to remind Siam to pay tribute to China many times, but Siam ignored china’s demand. Then came the break of the official relations between these two countries in 1884.
