Abstract “Laab”: the Lanna Kings’ Command Inscriptions Arunrat Wichienkheaw Associate Fellow of the Academy of Moral and Political Science, The Royal Society, Thailand The commands of the kings of Lanna of about 500 years ago were regarded as a kind of law, or edicts issued to serve special purposes. The royal commands were inscribed on gold or silver plates called “Laab Kham” [gold inscriptions] or “Laab Ngoen” [silver inscriptions]. Most Laab were inscriptions of the commands on the kings’ Buddhist activities, for example, their donation of slaves to the monasteries. The oldest extant Laab is a “Laab Kham” or gold inscription belonging to the mother of Phya Yod Chiang Rai, who was the king of Chiang Mai. This command inscription was engraved in 2031 B.E. In addition, Laab Kham inscribed with royal commands for nobles to enforce, and Laab Ngoen of the early Rattanakosin era inscribed with royal commands on taxation to be imposed on the Lawa people living in community outside Chiang Mai have also been discovered.
