ISO กับอักขระไทย 272 The Journal of the Royal Society of Thailand Volume 40 Number 4 Oct-Dec 2015 Abstract ISO and Thai Characters Nitaya Kanchanawan Associate Fellow of the Academy of Arts, The Royal Society, Thailand In 1998, ISO 11940-1: 1998 - Information and documentation – Transliter- ation of Thai was accepted as an international standard by International Standard Organization (ISO). There are 87 Thai characters in this standard. Subsequently, ISO 11940-2: Information and documentation – Transliteration of Thai characters into Latin characters – Part 2: Simplified Transliteration of Thai language was also accepted. This standard includes pronunciation rules for machine use. In Thailand, however, there are additional sets of characters used in the northern and northeastern regions. The Royal Society of Thailand, with one duty to preserve and promote Thai language, undertook this responsibility by appointing the Thai Noi Romanization Principles Committee on October 6, 2008, and The Committee on Romanization Principles for Tai Languages used in Thailand on January 39, 2013 in order to unify and submit the deficient sets of characters to ISO. Now two sets of characters, Akson Tham Isan and Akson Thai Noi, are ready for ISO’s consideration. There are 127 characters of Akson Tham Isan, including full forms and derived forms, and 78 characters of Akson Thai Noi. All symbols are unique and can be digitally converted, either way, between Thai and Romanized scripts. The position of some characters (preceding, following, above, and below other characters) is designated to ease the font design.
