The story was narrated through a series of letters by the characters in the story. Each character delivered different styles in their writing. The background of the story reflected the reign of King Louis XVI who was simple in lifestyle. The “libertins” must be polite and noble outwardly while inwardly concocting a complex scheme to rid themselves of people whom they viewed as enemies.
