Language changes all the time in accordance with the development of the world and society. Down the centuries English has developed as one of the languages in the world with the greatest diversity of expressions. The words, phrases, and idiomatic expressions used at present have their origins that can be traced back to Greek and Roman times. Words and expressions that were once used in specific fields now have more general meanings. Influences from foreign languages and cultures also contribute to changes in the pronunciation and spelling of some words. This paper shows the development of such words and phrases. Studying them, besides being a pleasant undertaking in itself, also enables the reader to have a clearer understanding of their meanings, which is helpful in reading and writing English correctly. Keywords : words, phrases, idiomatic expressions, dead language, language development
