วารสารราชบัณฑิตยสภา ปีที่ ๔๓ ฉบับที่ ๑ ม.ค.-เม.ย. ๖๑ ๑๐๕ ฐานันดรที่ ๔ นายมานิจ สุขสมจิตร นักหนังสือพิมพ์อาวุโส บทคัดย่อ “ฐานันดรที่ ๔” หมายถึง สถาบันทางสังคมลาดับที่ ๔ ซึ่งมีอิทธิพลรับรู้ได้อย่างสม่าเสมอ รองลงมา จากฐานันดรลาดับที่ ๑ คือพระมหากษัตริย์ผู้นาทางจิตวิญญาณและขุนนาง ลาดับที่ ๒ คือบรรพชิตทางศาสนา จักร และลาดับที่ ๓ คือฝ่ายที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการควบคุมและบริหารราชการแผ่นดิน เอดมันด์ เบิร์ก (Edmund Berke) สมาชิกสภาผู้แทนราษฎร เชื้อสายไอริช เป็นผู้ใช้คาว่า ฐานันดรที่ ๔ (Fourth Estate) เป็นคนแรกในการประชุมรัฐสภาของสหราชอาณาจักร (United Kingdom) เมื่อ ค.ศ. ๑๗๘๗ โดยได้กล่าว คานี้เมื่อชี้มือไปยังกลุ่มเป้าหมายที่นั่งทาหน้าที่อยู่ที่ระเบียงด้านบน คือผู้สื่อข่าวหนังสือพิมพ์ The Times of London ซึ่งขณะนั้นมีหนังสือพิมพ์เพียงฉบับเดียว ในกาลต่อมา เมื่อเกิดมีสื่อมวลชนขึ้นอีกหลายประเภท ก็ ได้มีการหมายรวมว่า สื่อมวลชนทั้งหลายทั้งหมดคือ ฐานันดรที่ ๔ และผู้ที่ได้นาคาไทยว่า “ฐานันดรที่ ๔” มาใช้แทนคาภาษาอังกฤษ Fourth Estate คือ พลตรีพระเจ้าวรวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าวรรณไวทยากร กรม หมื่นนราธิปพงศ์ประพันธ์ คาสาคัญ : ฐานันดร, สถาบันทางสังคม, สื่อมวลชน Abstract: The Fourth Estate Manich Sooksomchitra Senior Journalist The Fourth Estate means the social institution number four, which has an inferior acknowledged influence invariably to the great king who is the first in rank of nobility. The great king who is the chief of spirit. Number two is the priest of religious authority, and followed by the people involved in governmental administration respectively. Edmund Berke, an Irish lineal Member of the House of Representative was the first to use the world the Fourth Estate in The UK Parliament, in 1787. He stated the word, while pointing his finger at the target press men, who were sitting on duty. Those people were journalists of The times of London, which was the only newspaper at that time. After the occurrence of many other mass medias, there has been a generalization, declaring that all the medias are the Fourth Estate. The person who applied, defining the term “ฐานันดรที่ ๔” (Tanandontee See) to be utilized instead of the Fourth Estate, was Professor Major General H.R.H.
